Pele is Seen at Halema‘uma‘u Crater
In late March of 1905, crowds gathered at the edge of Halema‘uma‘u Crater, eager to witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of a volcanic eruption. The scene was set for nature’s fiery display, but what transpired that night was anything but ordinary.
Among the onlookers was a man identified in the newspaper as ‘A. Capilos,’ the second cook at the volcano house. An intriguing detail about Capilos was that he claimed to be a descendant of ancient Greek heroes. As the crowd marveled at the fiery spectacle, Capilos became entranced, his gaze fixed intently on a distant spot deep within the crater.
Then, something extraordinary happened. Capilos pointed towards the crater, and the crowd followed his gaze, their eyes widening in disbelief. There, amidst the smoke and molten lava, emerged what appeared to be the form of a giant woman. This figure, unmistakably Hawaiian in appearance, seemed to rise from a reclining position. Slowly, she moved to a sitting posture and then stood, her movements fluid and deliberate.
The figure began to perform a series of gestures, her arms moving gracefully as if conducting a silent, sacred dance. In a moment of profound stillness, one hand rested gently on her throat, and she bowed low in a dignified gesture, as if paying homage to the depths of the crater below.
Just as suddenly as she had appeared, the apparition was shrouded by a billowing curtain of smoke and steam. The ground shook with a violent tremor, as if an earthquake had rippled through the crater. Explosions echoed from the crater’s mouth, amplifying the sense of impending doom.
Those who witnessed the event were convinced that Madame Pele, the goddess of volcanoes and fire, had made her presence known. They believed her appearance was a portent of a major volcanic eruption to come, a dramatic sign of nature’s raw and powerful forces at work. The sight of the giant figure bowing in the heart of the volcano became a powerful symbol of divine intervention, adding an eerie layer to the already breathtaking volcanic spectacle.
