Ghost Lights in Manoa Valley

1909 spook shifts up to manoa

In December 1909, in the back of Manoa valley, people began to see orbs of light coming from the earth. The mysterious phosphorescent fire had the Hawaiians and Japanese living in the valley distinctly scared. A Japanese yard boy said that about 10:30pm in the upper part of the valley a particular light seemed to glow. The light was not strong, but being the only fire in the valley, it called attention. Many people went over to investigate, and many fled once they saw what was happening, but others stayed.

The witnesses said they saw a bluish-red flame appear to come up through a crack in the ground, take the form of a circle, and then break into phosphorescent tongues, which spread over the ground and wound about the tufts of grass. Each particular tongue seemed to take its own method of maneuvering about. Finally, all the parts appeared to reassemble. The circle hovered about the place from which it originally emerged and finally appeared to be sucked back into the earth.
