Bothersome Ghosts at Barking Sands, Kauai

Military housing at Barking Sands, Kauai where residents say that ghosts and night marchers are bothersome

When Cora Rolfe moved into her beachfront house at Barking Sands, she knew right away that something was wrong.

1985 newspaper headline, Haunted homes, is Barking Sands a gateway to Hawaiian afterlife?

In a 1985 article, the wife of a Navy lieutenant commander said that she would get a strange, cold feeling sometimes when walking down the hall. It was like an air conditioner, even though she didn’t have one.

At night, the ceiling light in one bedroom would flash on and off, and the hallway smoke alarm blared so often for no apparent reason that they finally disconnected it. Also at night, they could hear what sounded like the refrigerator door opening and closing, but when they looked into the kitchen, the noise stopped. For months, they just tried to ignore the weird happenings until their grandchildren came to visit. The children reported seeing a woman dessed in white and Mrs. Rolfe said she overheard one child having a conversation with someone who wasn’t there.

“He was crying and he told the lady he didn’t want any chocolate chips,” she said. When she was packing her household belongings for a move to the mainland, Mrs. Rolfe said she was hit by something invisible that flew out of a kitchen cupboard door.

Quote from 1985 article about ghosts, night marchers, and haunted houses on PMRF base at Barking Sands

These types of incidents were so common that they were acknowledged and discussed openly by PMRF officials. The house manager stated that it came to the point where she was no longer surprised when she gets complaints about off goings-on in the quarters. There have been reports of furniture and household items being moved around, refrigerators opening and closing, and shoes being turned upside down. The housing manager said all she can do is recommend the famlies get their places blessed.

Over the years, other children have described a “white lady” with “long hair” and wearing a “white shawl.” The base spokesperson at the time stated that only children have seen her and the children who reported the vision don’t know each other.

There have also been reports of “ghost cattle” that walk right through fences, and during construction at a radar facility, a Marine guard emptied his M-16 rifle at what he thought were nighttime intruders. Closer inspection revealed nothing was there.

In the station house, two airfield firefighters reported seeing a male apparition walk between their bunks.

Back in the housing area, one woman who lived there became so upset at hearing a disembodied voice call her name that she had the house exorcised. The voices stopped after that.

The Barking Sands area has long been known for being haunted. There are many stories of hauntings, pre-contact Hawaiian ghosts, and the legendary night marchers. If you’re able to gain access to Barking Sands, keep an eye out for otherworldly encounters!
