Hawai‘i Kai Ghost
In 1968, in their new home in Hawaii Kai, a family described an encounter with a ghost they called “Bernard.”
The house was only five years old and the neighborhood was brand new, so there weren’t any previous tenants. However, Bernard made his first appearance to the family’s 17-year-old daughter, who was a senior at Kalani High School.
The teenager said she was home alone one night, sitting in the living room, when she suddenly noticed that the books were falling out of the bookcase. The girl got up and put the books back in, and something tossed them back onto the floor. She put them back and right back out they came. This went on for about 15 minutes and then it finally stopped just as suddenly as it had started.
About a week later, the ghost reappeared in a fairly visible form. The girl said she could see him clearly but... see through him.
Since that time, she said hardly a week goes by that she doesn’t see the ghostly figure.
Although one of her girlfriends also saw the ghost, the girl said that she didn’t want to tell anyone else at first. Finally mentioned it to her brother and sister and they both confirmed that they, too, saw the ghost of a young man. Then the teenagers told their parents but, the parents hadn’t seen anything.
The teens said that they’d be sitting in the living room and one of them would look up and say, “There goes Bernard.” It was pretty common. He would walk across the landing between the bedrooms, or he’d peek around the corner.
When asked what he looks like, the girl replied, “He’s definitely Caucasion. And he’s either bald or blond.”
She drew a picture of Bernard and her sister confirmed that it was a pretty good likeness, only he’s somewhat clearer than that.
The girl said, “I thought that if he had a name, he would be friendly and he has been. He is very friendly. He looks like the snow on a TV screen right after you turn it off.”
When the mother was asked how it felt to have a ghost around the house, she replied, “I’ve never seen him, so it doesn’t bother me. I might add that my daughter is a bright, happy, normal girl who is well aware that she is loved, and has no ned to call attention to herself. Both girls read a lot and have spent a lot of time trying to arrive at a logical explanation for the whole thing.”
The girl was asked, “If this house is only four or five years old, what was here before it was built?”
“I kind of hate to say this,” the girl replied, “because it sounds pretty hokey. But there were heiaus all through here.”
