Woman in White at Keaiwa Heiau
Stories of the “Woman in White” can be heard around the world in almost every culture.
Kahuna nui Emma deFries was the great-great granddaughter of Keali‘iopunui and Hewahewa, the Kahuna nui of Kamehameha I. In 1971, she shared a story with the newspaper. In her words, she described a ghostly encounter:
“In 1934, we lived at Aiea, my aunt Rose Kilioulani, Grandpa Henry de Fries, and myself. On fair days, during mountain apple season, Grandpa Henry and our yard boy, Akino, would hike up the trail pas a heiau on their way to the highlands. One day, as they were walking past the heiau, Grandpa and Akina met a beautiful woman dressed in white. Her hair was very long and it was wet.
Grandpa stopped and conversed with the woman in Hawaiian. Just before they said their alohas, they heard a terrible noise. Large boulders and rocks had broken loose from above and rolled down across the path.
If Grandpa and Akino had not stopped to talk to the woman, both men would have been killed. As Grandpa turned to say goodbye to that lovely person, she disappeared. He looked all around for her but she had left as strangely as she had appeared.”
